What do you do when missing people becomes almost a default emotional state? It's always there, just at varying degrees. You become used to it, but that doesn't make it easier.
Everything else feels transient. Fleeting. Temporary distractions.
It's like you're on hold, which isn't always a bad thing. It gives you time to space out for a bit, or gather your thoughts. Sometimes, you get to listen to music, although let's face it - it's high time we got rid of the irritating elevator jingles and played some real music. But sooner or later, the waiting just gets on your nerves. You think, Hurry UP already! You contemplate hanging up, but you know you won't. You just keep waiting. And waiting. And waiting.
Because the alternative, is nothingness.
*Answer the Phone is a song by Sugar Ray. Whatever happened to them? I think the reason behind this title was me randomly picking up the phone and dialing four hundred digits to talk to my cousin in New Zealand. She wasn't there.
